A PAIR of young Huddersfield artists have won top prizes in a national competition.

Alice Tones, nine, and Sam Hinchliffe, 11, won their age categories to design a certificate given to children having medical treatment where needles are used.

Alice, from Almondbury, won the seven to 10-year-old category and Sam, of Golcar, won the 11 to 16 category.

The competition was run by pharmaceutical firm Smith and Nephew.

A website was also launched, so children could see their work online.

The site - www. bcoolkid.co.uk - also gives information about the fear of needles.

A Smith and Nephew spokesman said:

"Many of the entries were from children who have experienced the trauma of regular treatment where needles are used.

"The competition enabled them to share their experiences and give some comfort to those about to undergo treatment involving needles."

Alice and Sam each won a framed copy of their design, vouchers and copies of posters that will launch this year's contest.
