Snow caused gridlock in Huddersfield this afternoon. Hail and snow fell around 4pm, turning to slush and ice on the roads, quickly snarling up several main roads.

The worst hit area was Outlane all the way down New Hey Road and Westbourne Road into Huddersfield town cnetre.

It took up to 40 minutes simply to get off the motorway at junction 23 up to Outlane roundabout and then the traffic crawled all the way down to town.

Drivers are still urged to avoid the Ainley Top, Lindley Moor and Outlane areas.

Southgate also became a total logjam.

Accident reports also came in. A car crashed and flipped over on steep Gilead Road in Longwood at 4.20pm but the driver was only slightly hurt. A van smashed into lamp-post on Long Lane in Dalton at 4.45pm, but the driver managed to escape unhurt.

Lorries are struggling to get up inclines which is causing the surrounding area to become gridlocked.

Traffic is currently disrupted in Kaye Lane in Almondbury in both directions blocked due to broken down bus between Westgate and Ashes Lane and Longley Lane.
