A coroner has demanded a further investigation into the death of a toddler who was killed while in the care of her mum and her partner.

Recording a verdict of unlawful killing, Coroner Oliver Longstaff urged 'an appropriate body' to investigate the death of Summer Mai Rogers-Ratcliffe.

The Dewsbury toddler was killed by a fatal blow to the head in the morning of February 27, 2012, an inquest at Bradford Coroner's Court concluded this morning.

Summer's mother Victoria Rogers, her then partner Craig Sharp and Victoria's mother Susan Rogers were all arrested on suspicion of the infant's murder.

But the case was investigated and no-one was ever charged,

Concluding the inquest today, Mr Longstaff said: "The unexplained and unresolved death of a 21-month-old child is a matter of legitimate public concern.

"If the conclusion to this inquest identifies any steps that an appropriate body can take to alleviate that concern, I ask publicly and in the strongest possible terms that those steps should be taken."

Mr Longstaff said: "Whatever the state of mind of the perpetrator of the act that caused Summer's ultimately fatal injury, it would have been obvious to that perpetrator that Summer was being subjected to forces far in excess of anything she might have been expected to withstand, and which were overwhelmingly likely to cause her very significant injury."

But the coroner added: "The event that led to her death was, I find, an extraordinary and horrific one-off event that could not have been predicted."

Summer was found unresponsive by Susan Rogers after her daughter Victoria and Mr Sharp had left for work.

Both Victoria Rogers and Mr Sharp denied doing - or seeing - anything to do with Summer's death.

The tot died at Leeds General Infirmary on February 28 from a brain bleed.
