Three special summer markets are coming to Huddersfield.

The popular Alternative Markets and Upmarket Sundays are joining forces to create three weekends of special events in St Peters Gardens and Byram Street.

Taking place on June 13 and 14, July 11 and 12, and August 8 and 9, each Saturday will see Alternative Markets take over the gardens, and then be replaced the following day by Upmarket Sunday, which will temporarily relocate from its current venue at Brook Street into the gardens.

The recently-formed Alternative Market was established to develop and support young stallholders and performers aged 13-29 years.

It is part of the national ‘Teenage Market’ project which started in Stockport in 2012 and has been described by retail guru Mary Portas as “innovative and inspiring”.

The Alternative Market organisers have already held two very successful markets in the town centre venue - the first at November’s Festival of Light - and whilst a third was already planned for August, organisers said the opportunity to work together with Upmarket and create these three weekends was too good to miss.

Upmarket Sundays, usually held in Brook Street, is hailed a real hidden gem in Huddersfield, showcasing some of the best local and independent producers and artisans. Shoppers can browse vintage and contemporary fashions, and buy handmade jewellery, art and photography and much more.

Over the three weekends Alternative Market will take place on the Saturday from 11am-5pm with live music. Upmarket Sunday will open on the Sunday from 10am-4pm with street theatre, free children’s craft workshops and free face painting in June and August and balloon modelling in July.
