Our weather’s gone balmy in Huddersfield?Or should that be barmy.

For we are well into winter and Huddersfield is basking in temperatures well above average - with no sign of ice or snow on the way.

And as an added bonus, the weather conditions have been perfect to create some stunning sunrises, and Examiner readers have not been slow to capture them.

The skies have been turned into beautiful shades of pink and red as early-morning fog has given way to blue skies and sunshine.

But make the most of it - Huddersfield weather expert Paul Stevens is predicting more wet and windy weather over the next few days, even though it will stay mild.

Mr Stevens explained that the beautiful sunrises have come about because much of the UK is enjoying warm, tropical air from North Africa and Southern Spain.

“The sun at this time of year is at a very low angle and as it rises, the light refracts through the very low cirrus ice clouds.

“The rest of the clouds are at a great height and it means we get some beautifully colourful sunrises.

“There is early fog about but that is quickly dispersed and we have enjoyed some really pleasant days.

“That tropical air is keeping things very mild and we have been recording temperatures averaging about 11 or 12º which is about six degrees higher than the average for this time of year.

“Coming after a very mild autumn, it means we have started winter with very mild conditions and that is not likely to change.

“What we will see later today and over the weekend is a return to some wetter and windier conditions, even though the temperatures will stay fairly high.

“It is excellent news for the time of year and flies in the face of those who predicted the worst winter for 100 years and gales of up to 180mph.

“There is no sign of icy conditions or snow just yet.

“It is a little early to think of Christmas but the early forecast models suggest that Christmas Day will be wet and windy but very mild, perhaps about 8º. That’s far from being cold”.
