Thousands of people enjoyed a memorable day in the sunshine at one of Yorkshire’s best agricultural events – the 99th Emley Show.

Held at Factory Farm on Emley Moor simply trudging along the short distance from the car park to the show gates gave visitors the chance to take in perhaps the most spectacular view of the valley that Huddersfield affords.

As well as the traditional attractions of all the animals there were nods to children’s desire for fun entertainment with the Dingle Fingle Stunt Show proving a particular hit at Saturday's show.

Fifty-year-old Stephen James Grindle, of De Lier, Holland, has taken his show all over the world and had just returned from Abu Dhabi.

He and Sean Stimson, aka Slippery Sid, from Manchester, perform a tightly executed comedy routine called The Clown Town Crime Watch.

Stephen said: “I’m an undercover policeman out to catch Slippery Sid, a classic car thief.

“There’s a lot of precision driving in the half-an-hour show based on the Keystone Cops.

“It appeals to all ages and the children love to squeal at our antics!”

Elsewhere, Laura Johnson, 22, from Sheepridge was experiencing ‘table trauma’ after her mum Christine forgot to pack a table for her jewellery designs at one of the many craft stalls dotted around the show.

Laura joked: “Well, I will have a jewellery stall when my mum turns up.

“Unfortunately, she has had to go all the way home to get the table.”

Show secretary Sue Britton who has been involved in helping to run the show since 2007 said: “Last year we had 9,000 people and this year we are hoping for 12,000.

“Last year the weather was OK to start with and then it bounced down from 11.30am and by 4pm everyone was fed up, soaked to the skin and went home.”

Former show secretary Rachel Mackail from Ossett said: “I have been on the show committee for 16/17 years and it’s a lovely show, absolutely fabulous.

“Sue is brilliant, she works so hard. She goes well over the call of duty. We desperately need volunteers though so if anyone would like to help next year please get in touch.”

Malcolm and Linda Gilbert from Shelley said they were enjoying their day at the show.

Mr Gilbert said: “We come most years. It’s fantastic weather today so we are very much looking forward to it.”
