RIVAL supermarkets are pressing ahead with developments in Elland.

Asda is continuing with plans for a new store in the town – even though a Morrisons’ supermarket is already being built.

The original Asda application was deferred by Calderdale Council in May last year, but next week it will be again be before the council’s planning committee.

And if they fail to give the go-ahead for a site in Dewsbury Road, Elland, then the retail giant could push for a costly public inquiry.

Asda say their plans for Elland would create 200 jobs and bring a massive boost to the local economy.

But objectors to the plan say there are concerns about the impact on existing retailers in the centre of Elland.

Morrisons have already got permission for their new store and development work has already started on the site in Briggate.

Calderdale Council’s head of planning Geoff Willerton has recommended refusal of the Asda plans.

He claims that Asda have made no alterations to the plan even though concerns were initially raised about highways issues.

Asda have declined to comment on the application, which is due to be heard next Tuesday.

The supermarket firm currently has plans for a huge store on land off Queensgate, Huddersfield, which has yet to be submitted to Kirklees Council.
