LABOUR councillors want Kirklees to back a new energy project.

Labour leader Clr Mehboob Khan today called on the council to sign up to a British Gas- backed energy efficiency scheme.

The scheme includes rebates of up to £100 on people's council tax bills.

The Government announced last week that 16 councils across the country had already signed up to take part in the scheme and many others were in discussions with British Gas.

Clr Khan said: "Labour believes people in Kirklees deserve to be part of this scheme.

"I will be asking why Kirklees isn't taking advantage of this Government scheme that could cut £100 from people's council tax bills.

"Councils across the country have already committed to offer the rebates.

"They are available if residents install energy- efficiency measures.

"Kirklees should be following the example of other councils and sign up, so residents qualify for the savings."

Environment minister Elliot Morley said: "I welcome the positive and innovative approach of British Gas and local authorities.

"This is a good example of how the government's Energy Efficiency Commitment is benefiting millions of people through subsidised home improvements.

"In a period of high energy prices it is an opportunity to make major savings."
