MIGRANT workers should be given more help in getting state benefits, a report says.
The Government and European Union should do more to make migrant workers aware of what benefits they are entitled to, says the report by the Working Lives Res- earch Institute based at London Metropolitan University.
Researchers heard "appalling" stories about the way migrant workers were treated in England, says the report.
"Awareness of benefit eligibility of migrant workers needs to be increased - for example, Working Families' Tax Credit," says the report.
"General information material covering a range of topics (should) be made available to migrant workers when entering the UK.
"It could be in the form of a welcome pack. Anyone coming into contact with migrant workers should have access to the general information material."
It says local authorities could also improve the way they deliver housing, health, education and childcare facilities to migrant workers.
