A 48-year-old man has appeared before magistrates charged with murder after a body was found in Newsome.

Surjit Singh Sidhu appeared before Bradford Magistrates this morning.

No pleas were entered.

Sidhu, charged last night, is 48 and police have given his address as New Hey Road in Huddersfield.

A 30-year-old woman who was also arrested has been released on bail.

Police were called to a flat on Ashenhurst Rise in Newsome shortly after midday on Friday where they discovered the body of a 48-year-old man.

Sidhu was arrested on Friday and the woman was detained later.

The victim has been named locally as Martin Ackroyd and he is believed to have lived at the flat for four months.

Sidhu will appear on Wednesday at Leeds Crown Court for another hearing.
