AN Examiner Travel trip received a welcome charity fundraising boost in Germany.

The people on the trip to the Christmas markets in Valkenburg also went on a cruise on the River Maas.

While on board they met another group of visitors from the north east of England who were eager to join in their fundraising.

Examiner Travel escort John Thornton said: "We always have a raffle for charity on the Examiner trips and we are now raising money for the West Yorkshire Forget-Me-Not Trust.

"But the other people on board heard about the raffle and were eager to help."

The raffle blossomed out into quizzes and Mr Thornton - a former art teacher - also drew caricatures of people to keep the money coming in.

They raised about £180.

The West Yorkshire Forget-Me-Not Trust is raising money to build a hospice for children in Kirklees or Calderdale.

Mr Thornton said: "I did explain to the people from the north east the charity was based in the area where we live, but they said it was for children, it was Christmas and they wanted to do all they could do help. It was a terrific gesture."
