A HOLIDAY to Germany turned into a surprise school reunion when a former pupil met her old teacher.

Lynda Hirst, née Taylor, was amazed to find Rita Oldroyd was the courier on her Examiner Travel trip to the Rhine/Moselle area in March.

Rita was deputy head at Royds Hall High School, Paddock, and arranged Lynda's first holiday abroad on a school trip - also to Germany - 42 years ago.

"All these years later I went back to the same area with the same teacher," said Lynda, of Harrington Court, Meltham.

"Also on the trip was another old pupil, Anna Baker, née Semenczuk. She also remembered our teacher.

"She made our trip all the more interesting, with her wealth of knowledge," added Lynda.

Rita, of Modd Lane, Holmfirth, has worked as an escort for the Examiner since she retired from teaching 10 years ago.

During her time at the school she organised several trips for pupils of Royds Hall and Rawthorpe high schools, to help them improve their German and French language skills.

"It was lovely to meet Lynda and Anna again after all these years. I've met up with many former pupils during my time as a travel escort," said Rita.

She remembered taking three coaches of children on the 1962 trip, which cost £35.

Pupils had to wear school uniform for the outward and return journeys.

Jeans and black leather jackets were considered unsuitable for the trip.

The 10-day trip included visits to various places in Bavaria and Austria, including Salzburg, St Wolfgang and Innsbruck.
