AWARD-WINNING comedian Daniel Kitson surprised crowds at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival by giving an impromptu, outdoor show.

The 26-year-old star from Denby Dale was passing by when fire alarms went off at one of the festival venues and the building was evacuated.

He stepped up to take a turn on the stage when performers decided to continue their show outside.

The surprise act by 2002's Perrier Award winner delighted 1,500 people.

Stand-up comedian Stephen K Amos said: "I think it was one of the best experiences I have had at any festival, ever. When Kitson appeared the crowd went mad."

Kitson, a former Shelley High School pupil, is in Edinburgh to perform his new show, A Made Up Story (The Pod).
