TRAFFIC-calming measures on a main road in Huddersfield are slowing down cars in a quite unexpected way.

Six motorists have already hit a lamp-post at the entrance to car accessories shop Aspley Autoparts in Firth Street since it went up a week ago.

Now, the owners are urging Kirklees Council to take the troublesome light away.

The lamp-post was fitted in front of the store as part of the council's £210,000 traffic-calming scheme outside university buildings.

But at least one customer a day hits the post as they leave Aspley Autoparts.

"Customers are pulling up to the forecourt, swinging round and reversing, clobbering the back of their vehicles," said Milton Hartley, who runs the shop.

"Usually they're not best pleased."

Mr Hartley has asked Kirklees to remove the light.

"They've put a lamp on the other side of the road, virtually opposite. I don't know why.

"When the light near our shop went up we were a bit surprised, but we weren't too concerned. Then one or two people started backing into it.

"I have had to put tape round the base of it, so hopefully people can see it better."

Kirklees highways service is investigating the complaints.
