COUNCILLORS in Heckmondwike have started a campaign to keep weekly grey bin collections.

People are worried about the effect of changing to fortnightly grey bin collections, which is a scheme being piloted in other areas of Kirklees.

Grey bins and green recycling bins are collected on alternate weeks, with the aim of encouraging more people to recycle their waste.

Heckmondwike residents support the idea of making green bin collections more frequent – currently they are emptied monthly.

But they want grey bin collections to stay weekly.

Heckmondwike councillor David Sheard and former councillor Steve Hall are involved with the campaign.

They are surveying residents.

Once the feedback is complete, Clr Sheard will put people’s views to Kirklees Council officers.

Clr Sheard said: “Those of us who live in this ward could end up suffering a cut in services due to this scheme.

“People in Heckmondwike value their independence and they value common sense.

“They want Kirklees Council to use a bit of common sense instead of cutting services and disadvantaging families, the elderly and many other people.”
