POLICE evacuated an area of Ravensthorpe following reports of a suspicious package.

At around 3.10pm, police were called to an address in Northstead.

But they have announced it was a false alarm.

A 30-metre cordon was put in place and the residents were evacuated while they waited for the Army's bomb squad to attend.

On arrival, the EOD - the Explosive Ordnance Disposal, are believed to have found bottles of liquid within a holdall bag.

North Road was closed in both directions between the Huddersfield Road junction and Northstead.

Eight police cars and three vans were on the scene.

Buses and cars are being diverted through Church Lane. There are long tailbacks on the A644.

The road is expected to reopen around 6.15pm.
