Police evacuated Huddersfield Bus Station at lunchtime on Friday after a bag was left unattended.

Bus station staff reported the suspicious bag left near the entrance and police told passengers to leave the building and surrounding area.

Eyewitness Richard Scanlon said: "I was at work at Carers Count when around 1.15pm the fire alarm started up and we were ushered out of the building.

"Outside the police were ushering people away from the offices and the bus station.

"I went and asked the officers about the situation and they explained that there was a unattended bag and they were moving people back while for safety reasons.

"The grey fabric mid-sided bag contained a beige towel and a box with electronics that someone in the crowed described as a DVD player.

"The police then allowed people back in to the building."

The alert was raised just after 1pm and a cordon put in place.

The bag was found to be harmless and the cordon was lifted after about 20 minutes.

A spokesman for bus operator Metro, which runs the bus station, said the incident was dealt with quickly and the bus station was soon back to normal.
