A man has been jailed for five months after assaulting three people - including a pensioner- as he fled from a supermarket security guard.

The 68-year-old woman was knocked to the floor as she walked through Huddersfield town centre with her young granddaughter.

Szekely Laszlo admitted three assaults and a charge of being drunk and disorderly when he appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that the string of attacks started on January 5 following an incident in the Market Street branch of Sainsbury’s.

Laszlo, 33, was sitting on a till scanner and was asked by security guard Thomas Wrigglesworth to get off it.

He became abusive and aggressive towards the security guard before leaving and heading to Imperial Arcade.

Laszlo was shouting loudly next to Dennis Ogle who asked him not to shout in his ear.

Vanessa Jones, prosecuting, said: “Mr Laszlo responded in an aggressive manner, he squared up to Mr Ogle with his arms up as if to fight him.

“In fear he was going to be hit, he back off down the Imperial Arcade.

“He was followed by Mr Laszlo who charged at Mr Ogle and threw a punch at him.”

“Mr Ogle ran off but was again chased by Mr Laszlo towards the police station.”

There police intervened but while this was happening 68-year-old Irene Derrick was walking past with her seven-year-old grandchild.

Mrs Jones said: “She heard the disturbance, was fearful and took hold of her granddaughter’s hand.

“The defendant ran into her, connecting with the front of the lady’s body.

“As a result of that impact Mrs Derrick fell to the floor, landed on her back and she felt pain.”

Mr Wrigglesworth, who had followed Laszlo from the store, was also assaulted.

Laszlo, of no fixed address, lunged towards him to headbutt him but the security guard helped detain him.

The court also heard about a further incident on January 11 where Laszlo went to Castlegate police station where his partner was being held.

He was escorted by police from the building but started kicking the gate and hurled abuse at the officers.

Laszlo was subject to a suspended jail term at the time of the offences.

Catherine McCullough, mitigating, said that all of the offences occurred while her client was drunk.

She added that his father died while in Hungary last December and that’s when Laszlo started to drink heavily.

Magistrates sentenced Laszlo to a total of 20 weeks in custody.
