VOLUNTEERS are needed to join a panel helping to tackle youth crime .
Clr Ann Raistrick, Kirklees Council cabinet member with responsibility for the youth offending team, said: "This is a challenging but rewarding task.
"The aim is to prevent first time offenders from committing more crimes.
"Volunteers will also gain a good understanding of how youth justice and its various programmes are working."
The Youth Offender Panel deals with young offenders who have appeared in court for the first time and pleaded guilty to a criminal offence.
The panel agrees a contract with the young person that requires them to make amends.
There are two community members on each panel and one person from Kirklees Youth Offending Team.
Community members are needed from all ethnic, racial and social backgrounds but they must be over 18.
No special qualifications or experience are needed.
Training, support and expenses are provided.
