One of West Yorkshire’s grandest historic mansions is up for sale again.

Carr House – the largest home on the gated Kirklees Park estate – is on the market for a cool £1.3m.

The Grade One listed house, which dates back to the early 17th century, was last sold in 2009 for £1m.

Kirklees Park estate is said to be where Robin Hood died and was buried.

The estate is closed to the public but estate agents Charnock Bates gave the Examiner an exclusive tour.

Carr House includes a Jacobean front, an oak room, a ‘flying’ staircase designed by Georgian architect Carr of York, mullion windows and a library with a gilded neo-classical ceiling.

A listing by Halifax estate agent Charnock Bates describes the giant four-bedroom house as: “This superb Grade One listed property, which has undergone major renovation in the 1990s under the auspices of English Heritage, offers unique and elegant living, boasting a spectacular array of original features.

“A very rare opportunity has arisen to purchase the principal part of the historical Kirklees Hall.”

Carr House is part of Kirklees Hall, which was the seat of the Kirklees Park estate, formerly owned by the Armytage family since 1565.

Lady Margarete Armytage, who died in 2008, was the last of the family to live at Kirklees Hall until 1997 when she moved to a smaller property next to Kirklees Priory.

The 750-acre estate, which was itself on sale for £7m last year, was recently acquired by a private buyer.

Kirklees Council is named after the estate even though – ironically – much of the estate is in Calderdale.

Three other historic listed houses on the estate are also for sale, costing between £425,000 and £625,000.

The estate, which includes manicured grounds and woodlands, is accessed via a gated private drive off the A644 Wakefield Road from the M62 at Brighouse or from Cooper Bridge.
