INTEREST in dance classes has rocketed thanks to hit TV show Strictly Come Dancing.

And a Huddersfield dance teacher says more men than ever are taking to the floor.

Yell.com, the website of the Yellow Pages, says there was a 56% increase in searches for dance schools during this year’s series of the BBC 1 programme.

Dance teacher Hazel Robertson, who takes Saturday classes for children at Huddersfield New College, as well as adult classes elsewhere, said the show’s impact was obvious.

“There has been a steady increase in interest in the last few years, especially when the programme is on,’’ she said.

“As a result of Strictly Come Dancing people are talking about dance in social situations, which they weren’t doing a few years ago.

“It’s good to see a lot more men taking it up as well. They are a lot more willing to come along and give it a go.”

She added: “Dancing is good exercise, it’s enjoyable and it’s a great way to meet people.”
