It was a walk back through the history of a proud sport.

And, fittingly, the Rugby League Founders Walk was launched in Huddersfield - the town that gave birth to the sport 120 years ago.

Former playing stars joined sports officials and supporters at the former Fartown ground yesterday to launch the 120-mile walk.

They made their way the two miles to the George Hotel, in St George’s Square, where the sport was founded in 1895.

In the coming weeks, further sections of the walk will be completed, running to each of the 22 founding clubs.

They include some big names still linked with the sport, such as Hull FC, Leeds, St Helens and Wigan.

But there are also clubs which have long since disappeared including Brighouse, Liversedge, Manningham and Tyldesley.

Huddersfield Giants chairman Ken Davy was one of those who took the first steps,, along with Rugby Football League chief executive Nigel Wood.

Ken said he was delighted to help launch the Founders Walk.

He said: "It's important we celebrate the history of the sport and particularly the uniqueness of it as far as Huddersfield is concerned, with it being founded at The George Hotel.

"It is a sport that is not always given the prominence it deserves.

"I don't know of any other sport in the world which can trace the exact time, date and place as to where it all began.

"We at the Giants are very proud to wear shorts which state that this is the birthplace of rugby league".

The stars were joined by former players Alex Murphy, a former Huddersfield coach who was a legend with St Helens; Garry Schofield, another former Huddersfield coach who made his name with Leeds and Great Britain; and Adam Fogerty, who played for Halifax, St Helens and Warrington but also made his name as an actor - and as owner of a fish and chip shop in Huddersfield.

Four clubs - Batley, Leeds, Wakefield and Widnes - still play on the same grounds as they did that first season. Huddersfield moved from Fartown in 1992 to play at lLeeds Road and then what is now the John Smith’s Stadium.

Mr Wood, who intends to complete the full walk, said it would be “a fascinating journey into the past, as well as a celebration of our great sport”.

The 22 founding clubs of the Northern Union, as rugby league was known at the time, were Batley, Bradford, Brighouse, Broughton Rangers, Halifax, Huddersfield, Hull FC, Hunslet, Leeds, Leigh, Liversedge, Manningham, Oldham, Rochdale Hornets, Runcorn, St Helens, Stockport, Tyldesley, Wakefield Trinity, Warrington, Widnes and Wigan.
