YOUNGSTERS from a Huddersfield school got a flavour of the Continent - in the town centre.

A group of 10-year-olds from Paddock Junior, Infant and Nursery School visited the three-day Continental market in New Street.

Educational assistant Vicky Plum said she thought teaching the children about other cultures was important.

"The nine- and 10-year-olds have French lessons once a week and they really enjoy them. They are learning quickly and doing really well," she said.

"It is very important the children learn about different cultures because it teaches them about the world they live in."

The market was promoting the tastes of French cheese, the colours of Dutch tulips and the smell of Italian leather.

The market, which travels the UK, boasts more than 30 stalls, offering everything from hand-crafted handbags to Dutch pancakes.

Kirklees Council events officer Maria Wilson said the market was always welcomed by town centre shoppers.

She said that this year there would be lots of events with a French feel, because it was 50 years since Huddersfield was twinned with Besançon.

"It is always great in the town centre when the market is here. It really adds some life to everything," she added.

"People seem to love sampling all the different foods and flavours.

"In October there is going to be a big event, with the mayor of Besançon coming. We hope to have French lessons in New Street for the children as well."

The market continues today and Saturday, when there will be a Chinese New Year parade, starting at 11.30am.
