TAXIS are allowed to take customers to a Huddersfield supermarket, Kirklees Council has confirmed.

The Examiner received reports that some cab firms were refusing to take elderly customers to the Sainsbury’s on Market Street for fear of being caught by the new parking camera van.

The council introduced the vehicle in May to catch motorists who park illegally.

A taxi driver is believed to have been fined after being snapped stopping outside the supermarket to drop off a customer.

But a council spokesman said: “The regulations and enforcement outside Sainsbury’s in Market Street have not changed.

“We fully understand the issue raised and as long as the driver and their customer are with the vehicle – rather than the driver parking outside the store waiting for the customer to emerge – there is no problem.

“The area outside Sainsbury’s regularly has up to three buses trying to get into the bus stop. If a taxi is parked up waiting for a customer, they cause an obstruction which leads to congestion for other road-users.”
