REVELLERS are warned to avoid bogus taxis when travelling home after a night out.

All genuine taxi drivers in Kirklees are vetted and their details checked alongside the Criminal Record Bureau.

But jumping into a car masquerading as a taxi can have fatal consequences.

And the London-based Taxiwise campaign has published a booklet providing revellers with information to help them distinguish genuine taxis from the fake.

Doug Holliday, group licensing officer for Kirklees Council said: "Make sure you always get into a private licensed vehicle or hackney carriage and that the private hire vehicle is pre-booked."

All hackney carriages in Kirklees are painted white with a visible sign on top of the vehicle.

Private hire vehicles bear the company logo on their side and carry a back plate with the car's details.
