A FIRE shut a fish and chip shop as the owners were preparing for their busiest time of the week.
Black smoke began pouring from an extraction unit at The Corner Fisheries at the junction of Carr Street and Smiths Avenue in Marsh at 4pm yesterday.
Owner Keith Ashworth, who runs the business with wife, Annette,
said: "We had switched the frying ranges on and were getting ready for the usual Friday teatime rush when the smoke started to come from the smoke extraction unit.
"I sprayed it with a dry powder extinguisher and it seemed to knock the fire out.
"The range is completely undamaged."
Huddersfield firefighters had to cut a small hole in the chip shop's floor to make sure the fire was fully out.
Mr Ashworth, who has run the business for 18 years, is confident the shop will be be back in action next week after repairs.
