A NEW form of rugby has been tested out by sports teachers from Calderdale and Kirklees.

Members of the group, which works with disabled people, attended a workshop in the South Leeds Stadium to learn how to play the new version, tag rugby.

Earlier this year disabled youngsters in Yorkshire were given the chance to play the sport in special tournaments, with help from England rugby legend Ben Clarke.

Although similar to traditional rugby, a "tackle" is made by snatching coloured flags, worn on the hip, from the ball carrier.

The initiative, formed by the RFU (Yorkshire), the Rugby League, The Federation of Disability Sports Organisations and Npower, will culminate with an annual tag rugby competition at Sandal RUFC in April 2004.
