A HUDDERSFIELD hospital is offering screening for Alzheimer's disease.

The Nuffield Hospital at Birkby has launched the new test that detects memory loss.

The Memory Assessment test can, for the first time detect people who are at highest risk of the disease before the symptoms become fully apparent.

Around 700,000 people in the UK suffer from Alzheimer's disease.

The simple test aims to reassure people that their memory loss is nothing more than getting older.

Dr Garry Savin, medical adviser for Nuffield Hospitals Health Screening, said: "It is very important that people suffering from the early symptoms of dementia are picked up as soon as possible.

"Too many people with a real problem are not.

"Most fears will be quickly shown to be unfounded.

"This is a very simple test which can reassure most, but can also pick out those at highest risk who need to see a specialist as early as possible," he added.

If a problem is detected by the screening team people can then prepare for possible changes to their life.

The 30-minute test is carried out by a nurse using a hand-held computer and costs £125.
