INTERNATIONALstudents from China celebrated the Year of the Rat at Huddersfield Technical College.

The College’s international students came together to mark the Chinese New Year.

New Year is the most important of the Chinese holidays. This year it is the Year of the Rat, a protector and bringer of material prosperity.

Students wore new clothes to signify a new year and red that symbolizes good luck. The College’s Student Lounge was decorated with red lanterns and knots and traditional red envelopes containing gifts were given to the students. The College’s learners then joined other Chinese students from Huddersfield at a party organized by the Chinese Students and Scholars Association.

Wei Lu-Ward, China Liaision Officer for the College, said: “In China people usually take a few weeks holiday to prepare for the celebration and usually see in the New Year with a family.

“We didn’t want our Chinese students, who are a long way from home, to miss out so we’ve decided to host a party with fellow students and staff.”
