A teenage cyclist is fighting for her life after falling off her bike in Marsden.

The Yorkshire Air Ambulance was called out at 8.26am today to fly the 18-year-old woman to Leeds General Infirmary after she suffered serious head injuries.

She is still receiving treatment at LGI.

The young woman had travelled by train from Manchester to Marsden and then mounted her cycle in Station Road where she came off the bike.

It is thought she may have hit her head on a stationary vehicle as she fell.

No other vehicles were thought to be involved.

It is not known whether she was wearing a helmet.

Police are now appealing for witnesses. PC Cameron Buchan, of the Western Area Roads Policing Unit, said: “We know that she had travelled to Marsden train station earlier this morning and had begun her journey in Manchester.

“She has then got onto a bike which is particularly distinctive, with a white frame and blue wheels. It is important that we understand where she has retrieved the bike and her movements leading to the incident.

“We have conducted CCTV enquiries and we continue to investigate the circumstances.

“I would ask that anyone who saw this young woman at any stage of her journey, particularly on the train, to come forward via the non emergency number 101, and help us piece together what has happened.”
