A teenage uninsured motorist, driving too fast, struck and killed a retired nurse as she was crossing the street in Huddersfield.

Leeds Crown Court heard Elizabeth Bowers, 74, was on her way to the Irish League Club in Fitzwilliam Street, Huddersfield, for a meeting of the Oddfellows Society of which she was Provincial Grand Master.

Her husband Trevor had just dropped her off on November 3, 2014 and was driving up the road to park when Junaid Tanweer passed him going the other way.

Heather Gilmore, prosecuting, said Mr Bowers noted Tanweer, then 18, appeared to be going well above the 30mph limit in a Toyota Aygo hired earlier that day by a friend.

He was captured on CCTV about 150 metres from the impact doing 55mph and by the time he struck Mrs Bowers, who by then was on his side of the road, he was still doing 45-50mph.

She was flung into the air striking a parked car and suffered multiple injuries including a fractured skull from which she would have died immediately.

Miss Gilmore said Tanweer did pull up and remain at the scene for several minutes as passers-by tried to help but he then ran off when he was told his victim was dead. He did not get far before he was caught and handed over to the police who had arrived at the scene.

Meanwhile Mr Bowers having parked his vehicle went to the club and when he did not find his wife he realised what had happened to her.

Tanweer was taken to the police station having lied to police about his identity giving his friend’s name and details not his own but his true identity was discovered and that he was not insured.

The court heard Mrs Bowers, a great-grandmother, was “a tireless worker for charity”. She was member of her local church choir who had helped to raise £30,000 for church funds and had recently raised £5,000 for the Meningitis Research Foundation.

Miss Gilmore said her son Derek and daughter Lynn had described the devastating impact on their family but added: “They say they hold no malice but have forgiven him and say he has to live with what he has done.”

Mark Ford representing Tanweer said he had panicked at the scene when faced with the enormity of what he had done “in a split second” and providing the false details was a continuation of that panic.

He expressed genuine remorse. He had recently been working in a hotel with hopes of becoming a manager, and had planned to marry “all of that has turned to ashes.”

Tanweer, now 20, of Spire Court, Marsh, Huddersfield was due to stand trial yesterday but changed his plea from not guilty and admitted causing the death of Mrs Bowers by dangerous driving. He had already admitted causing death by driving while uninsured and attempting to pervert the course of justice.

Jailing him for four and a half years with seven and a quarter years disqualification, Judge Tom Bayliss QC said his first words on sentence were about Mrs Bowers saying her family should be proud of her achievements.

“She had much to look forward to in life, weddings, christenings, birthdays, enjoyable family occasions. She will miss them all now and those she loved will miss her presence not just on those occasions but forever.”

“You caused that lady’s death by dangerous driving. You were driving well in excess of the speed limit about 150 metres away. At the point of the collision you were doing 45-50mph and you collided with Mrs Bowers.”
