A teenager has denied causing the death of a pensioner by dangerous driving in Huddersfield last November and a date has been set for the trial.

Junaid Tanweer pleaded not guilty at Leeds Crown Court to causing the death of former nurse Elizabeth Bowers, 74, by driving a Toyota Aygo dangerously in Fitzwilliam Street on November 3 last year.

The 19-year-old of Spire Court, Marsh, admitted a separate charge of causing her death while driving uninsured. He also entered a guilty plea to a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice by providing false details to the police.

A second defendant, Israr Ali, 23, of Upper Brow Road Paddock, denied a charge of attempting to pervert the course of justice by making false reports to police and a hire company that the Toyota Aygo had been stolen.

Mrs Bowers was struck while walking to an evening friendship group at Huddersfield Irish Centre.

Both men were bailed until a plea and case management hearing on December 16.

Judge Geoffrey Marson QC told them by that date they must provide statements of their defence. The trial was fixed for May 9 next year
