A boy was attacked with a machete in a horror attack.

The teenager has been detained in hospital with serious injuries following the broad-daylight attack in Birkby.

The 17-year-old boy received terrible injuries to his hand after he was attacked by a man with the weapon in Arnold Street on Saturday afternoon.

Detectives in Huddersfield are now appealing for witnesses to the incident which they say could be life-changing for the victim.

Arnold Street is a quiet street lined with terrace houses, which runs from Birkby Hall Road to Blacker Road.

Police were alerted to the attack after the boy was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary at around 6.30pm.

He is currently detained in the Infirmary in a “stable” condition.

His injuries are not thought to be life threatening.

But Det Con Paul Morrison, of Kirklees District CID, said: “This was a very serious assault with a weapon and the victim could be left with life-changing injuries.”

Det Con Morrison added: “We are investigating the incident as a wounding with intent and we would like to hear from any witnesses.

“We believe the area would have been busy at the time and we would like to hear from anyone who saw what happened or who has any information that could assist the investigation.”
