A teenager was stabbed in the back after enjoying a day out at Huddersfield Carnival on Saturday.

The 17-year-old Golcar youth had been out with friends all day when he got into a row with another group near McDonald’s in Huddersfield town centre.

The gang got into a dispute with the teenager’s girlfriend and swung a punch at her.

The victim and his friends turned around and walked away – but he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his back.

He instinctively reached out and found a slash in his jacket and his hand covered in blood.

He was taken to Huddersfield Royal Infirmary for treatment and was detained overnight. He was due to be released later today (Sunday).

The attack happened at just before 11pm last night in Kirkgate and police are appealing for witnesses.

Det Insp Mark Truelove, of Huddersfield CID, said the victim suffered a 2cm wound on the left side of his back close to the rib cage.

“Fortunately the injury was not life-threatening but it was in a significant area and we could have been dealing with something more serious,” he said.

“It would seem the victim had been in an altercation with a group of males who had been arguing with his girlfriend, and one has taken a swing at her.

DI Mark Truelove at Huddersfield Police Station.

“As the victim was walking away he has been struck in the back. He felt a sharp pain and has turned to find a slit in his jacket and blood.

“This wasn’t a random attack and it happened outside McDonald’s so other people may have seen what happened and we would like to hear from them.”

Mr Truelove said the youth and his friends had been out in Huddersfield enjoying the African-Caribbean carnival.

Detectives were checking CCTV images from town centre cameras.
