A TRAGEDY was averted by minutes at a house early today.

Firefighters went to the house, off Overthorpe Road in Thornhill, Dewsbury, at 12.45am.

More than a dozen teenagers had been having a party and when they went to bed one left clothes over a lamp.

The garments smouldered and caught fire.

But the dozing teens were wakened when a smoke alarm went off.

Four firefighters from Dewsbury went into the house using breathing apparatus.

They put out the fire and cleared the smoke.

Watch Manager Ronnie Goldwater said: "If there had not been a smoke alarm this incident doesn't bear thinking about.

"We could have had a tragedy on our hands.

"As it is, the people in the house were very lucky.

"The fire was confined to one room, but the smoke was throughout the house," he added.
