A man has been given a suspended sentence after he broke into a car and stole an airbag while it was parked on a garage forecourt.

The Peugot 107 was for sale outside Clemo Motors in Bradford Road, Cleckheaton when Terrence James Miles, was recorded on CCTV using a screwdriver to get inside about 10pm on April 11.

It was discovered the next morning that the airbag on the passenger side had been cut out, Anthony Moore prosecuting told Leeds Crown Court yesterday. Police arrested Miles after his DNA was found in a spot of blood and he admitted selling the bag for £60.

Miles, 29 of Malham Drive, Healey, Batley, admitted the theft and asked for 13 other offences involving items worth over £6,000 to be taken into consideration.

Sentencing him to 12 months in prison suspended for two years with 200 hours of unpaid work Judge James Spencer QC said he must also pay a “token” £600 compensation.

“You have committed a series of offences which have led to a great deal of loss to other people but your circumstances are such it would be impossible for you to pay everybody for everything.”

Steven Crossley, representing Miles, said he would be able to do work for the community at weekends having got his life back on track.
