A PLAN for another Tesco store in Huddersfield was unveiled today.

The supermarket giant – which has already submitted bids to build in the town centre, Holmfirth and Kirkburton – is now hoping to develop in Scissett.

A site alongside the swimming baths, currently occupied by a car spares business and car wash, has been earmarked.

Tesco aims to launch an express store on the site, which would trade from 7am to 11pm seven days a week.

The company already has Tesco express stores in Wakefield Road, Moldgreen, Westbourne Road, Marsh, and Long Lane, Dalton.

There are also plans lodged with Kirklees Council for a giant superstore on the site of the current Huddersfield Sports Centre, and for a large super-market in New Mill Road, Holmfirth. A further application has been given the go-ahead to convert a former filling station site in North Road, Kirkburton, into a Tesco express store. Tesco also has a superstore in Brighouse and a larger Extra store in Batley.

A spokesman for the project in Scissett said: “The proposed retail unit will operate as a Tesco express and will fulfil a dual function as a small convenience outlet meeting the day-to-day requirements of both passing trade and residents who live within walking distance.

“The store would sell a basic range of groceries, fresh and frozen food, sandwiches, snacks. newspapers, magazines, flowers and the type of goods normally found in such stores.

“Customers expect the same level of service from their shop at a larger superstore as when carrying out top-up shopping at a local level.

“The store will also provide an anchor to help maintain other local services and will reduce unnecessary shopping trips to more distant destinations.”

The spokesman added: “The idea of Tesco express stores is to serve a community.

“We tend to draw our customers from within five to 10 minutes walking distance of our stores, although passing trade is also important.

“We are keen to continue development in Huddersfield with our community stores.”

The company’s plans for Huddersfield town centre have attracted criticism.

Tesco want to move out of their current Viaduct Street store and build a new superstore off Southgate, on land currently occupied by Huddersfield Sports Centre.

They will help fund a new Sports Centre at Springwood for Kirklees Council.

But the move has been attacked by objectors, who fear another blow to town centre trade.
