A teenage supermarket worker was sacked after being caught dipping his hands into the till.

Kyle Hoodless, 19, was discovered stealing from Tesco as the store had installed tills which monitored the exact amounts taken by cashiers.

Hoodless pleaded guilty to five charges of theft by employee.

Kirklees Magistrates’ Court was told that the thefts happened at the Viaduct Street superstore between January 27 and February 5.

Hoodless, of Keldregate, Deighton, stole from the company when he was asked to operate a checkout during busy periods in the store.

Unfortunately for the teen, the supermarket had smart till technology installed.

The system automatically monitors the amount of money flowing in and out of every till.

Prosecutor Rory Byrne explained: “The tills weigh every compartment in the till to the exact amount. The store investigated when the tills were down.

“Each time he logged in, when he logged off the till was down by £10 on each occasion.

“The only explanation is he’s taken it.

“He does so when a customer hands over £20 or more. He simply takes £10 away rather than putting it in the till.”

Hoodless also stole scratchcards worth £20, the court heard.

Cheyrl Ford, mitigating, said that he has since been dismissed from the supermarket.

The company is also separately seeking £200 compensation from Hoodless due to the time spent by staff investigating the thefts.

Deputy District Judge John Maxwell ordered a report from probation staff before sentencing Hoodless.
