JOBS have been cut at a Mirfield textile firm planning a move to the Colne Valley.

Card clothing manufacturer James Holdsworth and Brothers Ltd has made eight staff redundant at its Station Road works.

Another four jobs have gone at its two subsidiary firms, Lila Hurst Ltd and Hirst and Williams Ltd, both at West Slaithwaite Mills, near Marsden.

Holdsworth, which was founded in 1790, said the job losses were part of efforts to cut costs.

These have been necessary in the face of a diminishing demand in the UK and competition in export markets.

A spokeswoman for the company said Holdsworth hoped to sell South Brook Mills at Mirfield for redevelopment as housing and move its operations there to West Slaithwaite Mills.

She said: "We have a property developer interested in the site at Station Road and we are now talking with Kirklees Council.

"The idea is to bring all three businesses under one roof at Marsden, which will create savings and improve efficiency."

Holdsworth and its two subsidiaries employ more than 80 people.
