A man who was spared prison celebrated by shouting: “Get in there!” as he was led out of court yesterday by a security officer.

Stefan Rychter, 30, had pleaded guilty earlier this month to stealing a bottle of Disaronno liqueur worth £19 from Sainsbury’s in Market Street, Huddersfield, on July 17.

He had also been convicted of two charges of failing to surrender to custody at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court this month.

In addition he faces charges of failing to comply with the requirements of a community order made by the court.

Rychter, of Back Stanley Street, Lockwood, pleaded guilty to failing to attend his office appointments on July 23 and July 30.

He also pleaded guilty to stealing three Playboy fragrances on August 20 worth £38.97 belonging to Boots in Huddersfield..

Alex Bozman said he was supposed to have been sentenced on August 20 but he was stealing from Boots.

The court heard he had drug problems and when he had attended the offices in connection with his community order programme complained that he found the officers’ behaviour “patronising and controlling”.

Ian Whiteley, defending, said he had not attended court because of “his chaotic lifestyle.”

He said his client had regularly appeared before the court “on a year by year basis” thanks to his drug taking.

However, between 2007-11 he didn’t commit any offences and was working but “over the last 18 months he has had a relapse into his old habits.

“One of the difficulties is him getting on a prescription. The only thing they can do then is feed the habit and commit petty thefts to pay for this.”

He said the defendant was an articulate young man who was unafraid to speak his mind when confronted with proposals he didn’t agree with.

Chairman of the bench, Paul Hollingdale, told him he could have been sent to prison as his behaviour passed the custody threshold.

He said: “We could send you to prison today for the offences. You have broken and not complied with many of them.

“However, we believe that you as an intelligent man have reflected while you have been in prison.”

He revoked the previous order and imposed a new 12 months community order with 30 days activities. Compensation of £38.99 was ordered to be paid to Boots.
