MANY people end up worrying they will end up fat after gorging themselves over Christmas and the New Year.

But Yorkshire Water now has to deal with waste fat which clogs up he county’s sewers, both big and small.

The company has released graphic images to the Examiner of how bad it can really get beneath Yorkshire’s streets.

Spokesman Matt Thompson said: “You just won’t believe what ends up in the sewage system. We’ve even found a Christmas tree down there!

“But one of our main concerns is the amount of fat that people flush away which leaves a disgusting mess in the sewers.

“Don’t pour leftover fat and greasy sauces down the sink. Anything with fat in it could solidify in your pipes, creating a blockage that stops waste water draining away and could even come up through your plughole.

“Let leftover fat and grease cool, then pour into a container and pop it in the bin together with any food scraps. Wipe oily and greasy pots and pans out first before washing them up.’’

“Around half of all blockages could have been prevented if items hadn’t been put down the sink and toilet and 20% of blockages are caused by fat, oil and grease being poured down the sink.’’

But another major problem lurking below is the amount of nappies, baby wipes and cotton buds thrown down toilets which now account for almost a third of all blockages.

Matt added: “Between 2010 and 2015 we will have invested £180m across Yorkshire to reduce the risk of sewer flooding both inside and outside people’s homes.’’
