A pet wallaby who hopped away from his Meltham home six weeks ago has found his own way back home!

The exotic pet, owned by Lucy and Dan Balmforth from Wilshaw, went walkabout six weeks ago - and Lucy appealed to Examiner readers to help find him.

He’s been spotted in Upperthong and filmed hopping around at Johnson’s quarry in South Crosland but the elusive marsupial couldn’t be enticed.

But this morning Lucy came home to find him sitting in his field next to his pal, as if he’d never even left!

She said: “I was coming up the drive and I could see a wallaby sat there so I thought the other one had escaped, but when I got to the pen I could see both of them were there. He was sitting in the field waiting to go back in. He’s decided to be a bit vicious with his friend because they have been separated for a few weeks so I’ve had to separate them.

“I just opened the gate and let him in - he’s had some brown bread and bananas!

“He is fit and well - I’m amazed and delighted - but I’m in disbelief!

“Every morning I’ve been looking out thinking he might come back, and here he is! It’s lovely.”

Lucy said the two wallabies were in adjoining pens so they could see each other and would hopefully make friends soon.

She said he escaped after being let out of the pen to play in the woods nearby, adding: “They have always come back but he decided to be adventurous.

“There are lots of brambles and leaves around so he mush have been eating them. He must have been laying low and exploring.”
