A teenage shoplifter hurled racist abuse at a security guard as he tried to stop him taking lager from his store.

Ian Muchmore, 19, admitted to charges of theft and racially-aggravated threatening behaviour.

The incident occurred at Lidl in Huddersfield on June 19, Kirklees Magistrates’ Court heard.

Prosecutor Bill Astin said that a security guard at the Castlegate store saw Muchmore leave with the pack of 18 bottles of Pilsner in his arms.

As he took him to the ground to stop him the teenager swore at him and used offensive racist language.

Muchmore’s solicitor Rachel Sharpe explained that the bricklaying student spent much of his time caring for his father who suffers from schizophrenia.

She said: “He drinks in order to try and cope and on the day was in drink and couldn’t remember the incident.”

District Judge Michael Fanning fined Muchmore, of Spen Valley Road in Ravensthorpe, a total of £215.

He said: “You insulted this man, in particular making reference to his race.

“You can not offend people simply because you do not like the colour of their skin.”

Muchmore was also ordered to pay £85 costs and £30 victim surcharge.
