A woman took groceries from a town centre store because she got a buzz out of shoplifting, a court heard.

Julie Sanders, 46, admitted the theft from the Trinity Street branch of Iceland.

She appeared before Kirklees Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

Vanessa Schofield, prosecuting, said that the incident happened on August 29.

On that date the store manager was informed by a member of staff that Sanders was acting suspiciously.

She was putting goods worth 26 into her bag before paying for some other items at the till and then leaving.

Sanders, of Lawrence Street in Canning Town, London, was stopped by the manager and admitted the theft.

Bob Carr, mitigating said that his client had been visiting her mother and daughter who live in Huddersfield.

He described Sanders as being in dire financial straits and added: “She says she gets a buzz out of shoplifting sometimes.”

Magistrates gave her conditional discharge for 12 months.

They told Sanders that she must still pay £15 victim surcharge.
