THIEVES set fire to a car when they failed to steal it.

Firefighters from Huddersfield fire station attended the blaze at Greenwood Street, in Primrose Hill, at 5.30am on Saturday.

The car, a Mitsubishi Shogun, was completely engulfed in flames and firefighters used breathing apparatus and one hose reel to put it out.

The vehicle, which was parked on a residential street, was completely destroyed.

Firefighters said it had been broken into as both of its locks were missing.

They believe the car was then deliberately set on fire when the thieves were unable to start it.

The owner, who was alerted to the fire by a neighbour, has called police.
