A COUPLE who met at Huddersfield Lawn Tennis and Squash Club have celebrated their golden wedding.

Francis and Wendy Colley, of Thongsbridge, were married 50 years ago at Holy Trinity Church, Huddersfield.

Mr Colley, 79, completed two years’ National Service in the Royal Navy and worked for 37 years at Firth Carpets in Bailiff Bridge before he retired as export sales director.

Since retiring he was a volunteer for 17 years with Meals on Wheels, and has been a bellringer at All Hallows’ Church, Almondbury, for more than 25 years. He also formed a Holme Valley-based walking group which still meets every Friday and, among other routes, the members have completed the Dales Way and Cumbrian Way.

Mrs Colley, 74, taught pupils how to play the flute at WakefieldŠGirls’ High School for 15 years. She also plays the flute in Huddersfield Philharmonic Orchestra where she has been a member since 1955.

She enjoys horse riding and has kept her own horses for 30 years. She also plays tennis at Thongsbridge Tennis Club, which she first joined 20 years ago.

The couple have lived in Fixby, Kirkheaton and Netherthong before moving to Thongsbridge two years ago.

They have three children Alison, Philippa (Pip) and Peter, and six grandchildren Jonathan, Katharine, Joe, Amy, Ben and Natasha.

Mr and Mrs Colley have celebrated their anniversary with a family weekend away in the Lake District.
