A Thornton Lodge woman was lucky to escape prison after throwing a pint glass at another woman.

Genna Holdsworth, of Springdale Street, appeared at Kirklees Magistrates’ Court today.

She had pleaded guilty to a charge of threatening behaviour at an earlier hearing.

The 22-year-old targeted victim Mary Hunt because she was involved in a dispute with her mother.

The incident happened on August 7 last year at The Wellington pub in Westgate.

Ben Crosland, prosecuting, said that Mrs Hunt was in the pub with her husband Frank and some friends.

The mother of Holdsworth was also there and this led to some trouble between the parties, magistrates heard.

Mr Crosland said: “Mrs Hunt says the defendant shouted towards her mother: ‘Is that her?’ and pointed at Mrs Hunt.

“She then walked towards her holding an empty pint glass in her hand and threw it towards Mrs Hunt.

“The glass hit a chair behind Mrs Hunt and it shattered everywhere.”

Holdsworth was arrested and admitted acting aggressively although she denied throwing the glass.

A special Newton hearing was held to determine the true facts and District Judge Michael Fanning concluded that the glass was thrown.

Magistrates heard that Holdsworth’s mother had previously been in a relationship with Mrs Hunt’s husband.

She subsequently made a complaint to police about Mr Hunt.

Magistrates were told that on the night of the incident Mrs Hunt had allegedly made threats towards Holdsworth’s mum and Holdsworth had been upset and angry about this.

Magistrates said they believed that glass was thrown as a ‘missile’ towards Mrs Hunt.

They sentenced Holdsworth to 12 weeks in custody suspended for 24 months.

She must complete 30 days of activities and pay £300 towards prosecution costs and £80 victim surcharge.

Finally, magistrates made a restraining order banning Holdsworth from having contact with Mrs Hunt for 12 months.
