Families flocked to Ravensknowle Children’s Gala.

Yesterday’s event, now in its 87th year, was staged at Ravensknowle Park in Moldgreen.

Thousands attended the day which featured a wide variety of activities and attractions taking place on both fields.

The grand procession, which wound its way through nearby streets, was this year led by the charismatic Frumptarn Guggenband.

The Barnsley-based group got feet tapping with their mix of brass and punchy percussion in the Swiss and German Guggen tradition.

It also featured the Elite Cheerleaders, the colourful fancy dress contingent and the floats of the Gala Queens and their court.

The opening ceremony followed which culminated in the crowing of this year’s Gala Queen, Kate Patterson from Dalton.

The Tour De France was the theme of this year’s fancy dress to mark the arriving of the cycling event in the town next weekend.

Crowds were entertained by a variety of entertainment both on the main stage and in the arena.

Magic Mike returned in his role of compare and entertained with his magic tricks.

Local singer songwriter Lottie Mae Farrell, who appeared in last year’s regional finals of the Open Mike UK competition, also performed.

There was a slice of animal action with the falconry display and the Ridgeside Lurchers dashed around the arena.

The customary distribution of children’s teas to youngsters aged between four and 14 took place during the afternoon.

Visitors also enjoyed a variety of stalls, model steam engines, bouncy castles and fairground rides as well as food and drink.

Publicity secretary David Smith said: “It was as full as ever with a few new attractions this year. People keep coming back with their families year after year and it really is a generational event.

“It’s a tradition, it’s one of those things that sticks in the mind and people want to come and keep supporting it.”
