They must have been bricking it when they saw the long queues.

But despite waits of more than two hours LEGO fans of all ages were determined to see Yorkshire’s biggest ever collection.

The Yorkshire Brick Show was staged at the National Coal Mining Museum at the weekend.

The two-day event attracted thousands and staff described the response as ‘unbelievable’.

Katherine Morley, the Grange Moor Museum’s commercial manager, said: “It’s been a fabulous event.

It has exceeded our expectations on the number of people visiting.

“We got three thousand on Saturday and had the similar numbers on Sunday.

“We’ve had to turn quite a lot of people away, unfortunately.

“People are prepared to do the queue of a couple of hours as when they get there they see it’s worth the wait.

“It has taken us by surprise - it’s the busiest weekend we’ve ever had.”

Families from all over the country flocked to see the huge variety of models.

These were all built by members of major LEGO user groups in the UK, including The Brickish Association, Northern Brickworks and the organisers Brickshire - the Yorkshire LEGO User Group.

Models made with the little plastic bricks have seen a recent surge in popularity and even inspired a global box office smash hit.

Ms Morley said: “LEGO is absolutely massive, the movie has just come out and I think that’s really captured the people’s imagination.

“The models here were absolutely fantastic and I think people had read about it and wanted to see it for themselves.”

Models covering all themes were on display, including city layouts and creations inspired by Star Wars.

Highlights included a massive Statue of Liberty, a football stadium full of people enjoying a rock concert, running train sets and a Tower of London which was constructed over the course of the event.

The event has proved such a success that the museum hopes to hold a another in the near future.
