Thousands of motorists were left frustrated in six-mile tailbacks after a rush hour crash shut the M62 motorway.

The driver of a van towing a flat-back trailer lost control on the eastbound carriageway near junction 24 at Ainley Top.

The silver Iveco van, with three people inside, overturned blocking three lanes of the motorway.

Disruption caused hours of delays for commuters making their way home and football fans heading to matches across the North of England.

The A62 Leeds Road was busier than usual for supporters heading to Huddersfield Town’s game against MK Dons at the John Smith’s Stadium.

Police were investigating the cause of the crash but said no other vehicle was thought to be involved.

All three people in the van, including the driver, are thought to have escaped unhurt.

A recovery truck was sent to the scene and police eventually started guiding stricken traffic past the blockage via the hard shoulder.

Traffic was also reported as being slow moving in the opposite direction as drivers strained to see what was happening.

Specialist officers from West Yorkshire’s Roads Policing Unit attended and confirmed on Twitter the motorway had been completely closed for a time.

Traffic builds up on M62 after vehicle overturns between j24 and j25.

Early estimates said it may be that the motorway would not re-open in full until at least 10pm.

All lanes re-opened around 7pm but tailbacks remained into the evening.

After the vehicles were removed a fuel spillage had to be cleared off the road surface.

The crash was the second in the space of two days to close the motorway.

On Monday a child and a woman were hurt in a four-vehicle accident .

The pair were in a car which was involved in a crash with two other cars and a van on the westbound carriageway between junctions 23 (Huddersfield) and 22 (Rishworth Moor).

The incident happened shortly after the Outlane slip road at about 11am.

Although no-one was seriously hurt the incident caused huge tailbacks stretching back several miles.

All three lanes were closed to allow emergency services access to the scene, and traffic had to use the hard shoulder.
